NEW YORK (AP) New research released Tuesday finds nearly half of American adults say President Donald Trump is not fit to be president and more than six in 10 believe he is not qualified to hold the office.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll found that Trump is viewed unfavorably by nearly eight in 10 Americans and by more than nine in 10 independents.
The survey found that 54 percent of Americans believe the president is a racist, while 37 percent said they were unsure.
Trump has drawn criticism for his response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left one woman dead and hundreds injured.
The president has blamed the violence on “both sides” and blamed “many sides” for the clashes.
The poll found nearly three in four Americans, or 72 percent, think Trump has failed to live up to his duties as president.
Another 33 percent said he has not lived up to those duties.
Nearly four in 10 said Trump has done a poor job.
A majority of Trump supporters (58 percent) said they believe the first lady should be a role model for young girls.
Only 20 percent of Trump’s supporters said he should not be president.
The Post-Dispatch/ABC News survey of 1,006 adults was conducted from Dec. 12 to Jan. 6, surveying a random sample of 3,068 adults who have a favorable view of Trump.
The results are considered accurate within plus or minus 3 percentage points.
